Big Cat Fight - Dhekelia Lions v Paphos Tigers

Dhekelia Lions V Paphos Tigers Joint Services League 23rd Jan 2010 Dhekelia

Dhekelia Lions 29 – Paphos Tigers 7

So the day of the first "Big Cat Fight" arrives. Yet again this fixture had to be rearranged due to pitch & weather conditions in Paphos, so this was played away at Dhekelia.
Rugby is played with a squad of 22 players and all are necessary but unfortunately 6 of the Tigers forwards 14 man squad were carrying injuries so this depleted their back up seriously, so these holes were filled with young Tigers and good old reliable Gary "Sinatra" Thomson who made yet another come back and played brilliantly.
The match got off to a flying start and the Home side Lions narrowly missed a penalty after only 2 minutes, but a hard fought match with the ball travelling from end to end and desperate tackling by both sides to prevent scores being made, kept both teams on their toes and it was 33 minutes before the first score came to the Lions, who created a great try from a short tap penalty, and duly converted to take them to a 7-0 lead.
From the restart a bad kick ahead from the Tigers went straight into the Lions hands and from their own 22 metre they counter attacked and scored again but missed the conversion so the Lions now lead 12 -0, and this score line held until half time.
The Tigers needed a quick score to get back into this game but unfortunately another aimless kick ahead from them resulted in another pick up and counter attack with the Lions getting another converted try and taking them to a good lead of 19-0.
However this was not all one way traffic and the Tigers started to get more possession and their forwards were starting to get the edge over their much larger opponents.
Five minutes late centre George Agathocleous pounced on a loose ball on the Lion's 22 metre line after heavy pressure from the Tigers and sprinted for the line scoring and converting so bringing the Tigers back into this game at 19-7 and another 30 minutes to play..
The Tiger's lineout's were a vast improvement on the previous week with AJ Pugh and Ginge "The Spring" Carruthers doing great work, but it was not enough to claw back the score despite numerous attempts by the Tigers who were just falling narrowly short of scoring, and the Lions took another fifteen minutes before they got another score this time a penalty which took them to 22-7.
This hard battle ensued right into injury time when the Tigers with their backs turned let in an unusually soft try which flattered their opponents score and made the final score Dhekelia Lions 29 Paphos Tigers 7.
This was the first loss of the season for the Tigers and a very hard match had been fought, and both sides were battle scarred bruised and bloody at the end, but a right royal rugby match had been played and enjoyed by both sides and their enthusiastic supporters.
The Tigers now need to go away and lick their wounds and learn to stop aimlessly kicking away such hard earned possession and that will soon get them back into their winning ways

Due to the recent bad weather the training ground at Kiniras has flooded and is therefore unable to play or train on this week. Alternative training has been arranged, players please check with Graham/Nick for details.
With more bad weather expected towards the end of the week it is unlikely that the pitch would be ready for a match this Saturday, so we have managed to re arrange this fixture to now be away.
As this is an Army base, Passports will be required and details must be submitted to the base for checking no later than Thursday 10 a.m., therefore please let me know if you wish to travel to this match no later than tomorrow night Wed 20th Jan or you will NOT be able to go.

Match Report Tigers v Limassol 16th Jan 2010

Paphos Tigers v Limassol Crusaders Joint Services league Match
16th Jan 2010. Kiniras Sports Ground
Paphos Tigers 17 Limassol Crusaders 3

After an unexpected switch of venues from Limassol to Paphos with just a few hours notice, the well organised Tigers supporters managed to get the pitch marked and poles upright in time for a 2.30 kick off.
So this local derby commenced with both teams having to make a lot of changes due to injuries the match was wide open and anybodies for the taking.
Early pressure came from Limassol and only good defence by the Tigers prevented an early score, however after 15 minutes another team change had to be made by Tigers as second row Vlad Mihaylov left with an ankle injury, and for a while their pack lost some formation and Limassol took advantage with a quick tap penalty and almost scored again but were held up by good covering tackles.
The Tigers were starting to put some good moves together but because of last minute errors they were not realised into points , and unusually they even missed a couple of penalties, so went into half time with the score, a probable fair reflection at nil all.
The Tigers needed a quick score to start the second half and thought they had achieved this after 2 minutes, but the referee judged it was knocked on when being grounded and was disallowed. Tiger hooker Graeme Scott disagreed with this decision and was sin binned for 10 minutes for dissent. Limassol took advantage of this situation and nearly scored a try themselves but were forced into touch preventing this score. Several rolling rucks were tried against the Tigers which were held up, and a frustrated Limassol flanker was sinbinned for fighting. However Limassol used their lineout advantage to great effect, and kept the pressure on the Tigers. Both sides were being penalised for silly matters and Limassol No10 Jonathan Davies converted his penalty to take the visitors into a 3-0 lead.
It was another 10 minutes before Tiger George Agathocleous levelled the score, and a quick tap penalty taken by the Tigers was only just held up inches short of the line.
Unfortunately over the next 10 minutes both Tiger's Thoma and Crusaders Spring were both yellow carded, and further penalties were missed, but tries were still to come.
Young Charles Gallagher came into the pack freeing up Agathocleous so the Tigers were able to reshuffle their backs and this made a marked difference to their style and within 5 minutes a try was forthcoming. A great scrum picked up and taken on 3 times by the forwards sucked in Limassol and so the ball went along the backs for George Agathocleous to score under the posts ands he made sure of this conversion taking the Tigers to 10-3
At the restart Tiger Captain Matt Lowe took a hanging 50/50 ball and freed it up to go along the line and George and Dimitri inter passed several times with all their backs covering 60metres before Dimitri scored under the posts, converted again by George.
Final score Tigers 17 Limassol 3.
This was a typical local derby, with both sides missing key personnel, sinbinnings, missed penalties and disallowed tries, but the Tigers have now played 6 and won 6 matches in the League and are currently table toppers, with 6 more matches to go.

Match Report Tigers v Akrotiri 9th Jan 2010

Paphos Tigers v RAF Akrotiri Sat 9th Jan 2010 Kiniras Sports Ground Paphos.

Tigers 16 Akrotiri 3

On a hot sunny afternoon in early January the Joint Services League recommenced.
The Tigers having won their first four encounters were hoping for another win and the well drilled and coached RAF side were out to spoil this aspiration.
Early pressure from Akrotiri nearly realised points when an attempted drop goal just narrowly missed, and a penalty just after also missed, and it was 20 minutes before Tiger George Agathocleous stepped up and converted his first score to take the Tigers 3-0 up.
The very big heavy Akrotiri pack was hard to control, and their over exuberance in a scrum resulted in another penalty to the Tigers and George stepped up again increasing the Tigers lead to 6-0 and 25 minutes gone.
The match was a very fast and hard encounter and good moves by both teams were only narrowly stopped, and this end to end match was still wide open, and the Tigers were penalised for tackling a man without the ball, and on 30 minutes the Akrotiri No.10 duly slotted his chance and made the score Tigers 6 Akrotiri 3.
Akrotiri kept up the pressure and were trying hard for another score but a scrum on the Tigers 10 metre line was well defended and a great blindside break out by scrum half Kyle Kleyn and Dimitri Maratheftis made over 50 metres to relieve the pressure. However this was not enough and at the next scrum the big RAF pack drove through the Tigers this time, but again good Tiger defence kept them out. Great breaks by big Tiger centres Fidias Efthymiou and George Agathocleous kept causing the RAF all types of problems, and the Akrotiri side were penalised in their desperate defence for "going over the top" of a ruck, and although George missed this chance he did not on the next when young full back Jack Bilton was late tackled, he made sure of this penalty and so at half time the Tigers were leading now by 9 points to 3.
Changes were made to the back row to start the second half and old Tiger campaigner "Deano" replaced the young and improving Sotiris Ioannou at back row, and an early score was just what the Tigers needed, and this happened within the opening few minutes as winger Danny Humphreys kicked ahead for centre George Agathocleous to chase and catch and sprint 40 metres into the corner for a cracking try, which he duly converted as well, giving the Tigers a lead of 16 points to 3.
Penalties were awarded and missed by both sides, and in the last 15 minutes huge efforts were made by Akrotiri to get back into this game but fantastic defence by the Tigers who were adamant that this would not (and did not happen).Numerous rolling rucks and mauls by Akrotiri were kept out by some brilliant tackling and defence and the pride of the Paphos Tigers team.
Three more substitutes were made during the second half including 17 year old Cameron Carrington-Porter making his debut, and so another great win for Paphos and five wins out of five in the league for this triumphant team.
